For most of my years shooting macro and close-up photography I have mainly used my Tamron 90mm lens.

A few years ago, I started using the new zoom lenses from Tamron, the 18-270, 16-300, 18-400, and the 18-300 on my mirrorless camera.

The other change in the last couple years are the larger megapixels on my latest cameras.  At 26 megapixels I can do some small crops and still get a good quality image.

My new way of shooting is I don't have to worry about perfectly framing my subject so that I don't have to crop the subject in post processing.

As you can see in this image, I just framed a large area with my zoom lens.

When I get home, I download the image and just crop out what I want. Add an artistic filter for the background in Smart Photo Editor and done.

If you live in an area where there are Beech trees, you will find they are one of the rare trees that will hold onto their leaves throughout the winter months.  When subject matter is limited in the wintertime, the leaves on the beech trees offers opportunities for some nice images. The snow makes for a nice white background.

For the last 20 years I've been teaching macro photography workshops and I've always told photographers to manually focus on your subject.

With my mirrorless camera, I just have to look at the subject framed up on the LCD and decide where I want the focus and touch that spot, and the camera focuses right where I want it.

So much easier and faster than looking through the viewfinder and rotating the focus ring until I got the focus on the spot of the subject where I wanted it.

A few years ago, I went to Iceland and when I was at a black sand beach, I searched out shore bird feathers on the beach sand and found this interesting feather. Here is the post processed image done in Smart Photo Editor.

Here is the original image from my Canon point and shoot camera.
